With advancements in high-precision greenhouse gas detection equipment, the demand for multi-point and multi-component respiration monitoring of soil and water has grown significantly. However, traditional multi-point soil respiration measurement systems face three major technical challenges:

  1. Limitations of Equipment Sharing: Multiple respiration chambers must cyclically share a single gas analyzer for sequential point-by-point monitoring. This results in a longer measurement interval for each point. The more chambers in use, the longer the overall measurement interval becomes, sometimes extending to several hours.
  2. Significant Temperature Interference: During sequential measurements, fluctuations in environmental temperature - such as changes in soil temperature due to solar radiation - can significantly affect microbial activity. As a result, the measured values may deviate from the true respiration rate by 10-30% or more.
  3. Reduced Data Comparability: These errors, along with potential instrument drift, diminish the reliability of statistical analyses across different treatment groups or time series, leading to larger discrepancies in findings.

The PRI-8700 Multi-Point Synchronous Sampling and Online Analysis System (Patent Pending) addresses the technical limitations of traditional multi-point soil and water respiration systems. It utilizes steady-state carrier gas and specially designed open respiration chambers (Patent Pending), integrating synchronous sampling and online analysis technologies. This innovation enables simultaneous multi-point sampling and real-time analysis for both soil and water respiration, improving the accuracy of carbon flux accounting, soil health assessments, and other related research.

The open chambers prevent the buildup of gases like CO2, CH4, and N2O, along with their isotopes, thereby eliminating feedback inhibition. Compared to traditional closed-loop systems, this measurement process is less likely to interfere with concentration and isotope diffusion in the soil profile and minimizes the adsorption of high-concentration sticky gases on the chamber surface. This makes the open system the ideal choice for measuring both gas concentration and isotope fluxes simultaneously.
